Starry Night hadn't noticed Carole entering her stall. She threw herself against the wall, bared teeth striking the bars that separated the stalls. "You don't love anybody!" She turned and tried kicking the wall; she couldn't reach Devon. "Jerk!"
"Whoa, whoa, girl," Carole held her hand in front of her, and slowly approached Starry. "Alright, calm down, big girl."

Starry Night finally heard Carole. She stopped kicking and stood, blowing like a freight train. Her sides heaved, and her eyes flashed angrily. The cross Frisian stared at the human.

Carole kneeled down. After a moment, she picked up a rock in the bedding and threw it at Starry's hoof.

Starry Night skittered sideways when the rock came at her. Snorting, she bobbed her head, continuing to watch Carole. Her anger at Devon was apparently distracted.

Carole put her arms out, and kneeled closer to the ground.
Starry Night stared at Carole, not comprehending. As the minutes ticked away, the mare's temper cooled, and her sides stopped heaving. Finally, she stepped toward Carole with her head lowered, anger replaced by curiosity.

Carole stood up, slowly. She reached for her grooming box, all while keeping her eyes locked slightly to the side of the mare's eyes.

(too bad they can't speak each other's language. then Carole could learn why Starry's so mad)

Starry Night stared at Carole momentarily then dropped her head and nibbled curiously at the bedding. She'd never seen this stuff until last night.

Carole whisked the dandy brush down the mare's side.
