We're going to have 3-5 layers, and have an interest in maybe raising a duck or two. Since roosters are illegal, we're thinking about getting a drake. We hear that hens feel a little more secure with a man around the house. Is this a good idea?

Depends on the drake. Roosters and drakes are different anatomically -and a drake that tries to mount a chicken can do some serious damage to her. Not all drakes would take a sexual interest in chickens- but it can be a big problem for those that do.

Can you substitute a dog for your spouse?

Sure.

Is it a good idea?

No.

It is more than likely that the Drake will ignore the hens and long for Duck companions. Or, he could be mean and constantly pluck their feathers and pick on them like some ducks do. Its hard to know exactly what will happen.

Not a good idea. Drakes have penises roosters do not. There is potential for a drake breeding hens to cause serious physical damage. Hmm, trade your wife for a dog, hmm.

Thanks for the replies. We certainly wouldn't want the drake to become overly amorous with the hens. In terms of the analogy about spouses and dogs, I did hear this piece of sage advice a while back...

Put your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car. Drive around for a few hours, then get out and open the trunk. Which is one is more glad to see you?
