I've read people refer to this trick before to find out who is laying what. What exactly do you do? Just squirt the bottle of food dye on the vent? In the vent? I've heard of using lipstick too. What is the technique?

I can think of one technique, just blot before you pucker. We dont want smearing!

I'm terrible. Never heard of either of these things, but the dye is a good idea!

I think I’d just put it around the outside of the vent not inside. @DuckyDonna did this not long ago.

My dad is pretty old fashioned. He's a country man living in a city who had a few chickens here or there as a kid but was not as "hands on" as me with animals. He's never had ducks. I talk to him on the phone about the ducks all the time and told him about this trick to figure out who is laying what. The response I got was (long pause)..."....Huh."

The absolute lack of descriptive words or emotion said a whole lot about what he thought about the technique...

6 feet and netted. But i let them out to free range in this pic. Their portion in the coop is boxed in. There is no way in or out without my unlocking the door.

So I take it no one has ever dealt with a duck "resexing" itself? That just...idk. Not home after I let everyone out. Had to run. But i'll know more when I get home in a bit.

Sometimes its what's not said outloud that speaks the loudest to us. I wish we could have known what was going through his mind.

I bet he had a good laugh with his buddies over some beer after that conversation.
