Hi,
I have a drake that mates with one of the females but is very rough. He has stripped all of her feathers from her neck and has now ripped the skin off. I have separated him from her but any opportunity he will mate with her and rips the skin off. I am worried that she will get an infection.

I have clipped his wing, so he cant fly into her separate area of the run. I have 2 other feamales but he,s not as rpugh with them.

Any ideas what i can do?

Unless you are planning on hatching ducklings, keep him separated from the hens until this autumn. By then her feathers should have grown in, and his hormonal level will be decreasing.

Do you want to have ducklings? Because I had a male do that and it was fall and was still very violent. I decided to sell him because of the safety of my females

Hi both,
Thanks for advice. We are not after ducklings - if they happen then so be it. We thought a drakes was a good idea to make the flock complete. I did think of selling him. He is quite tame with us and feeds out of our hand. So we are quite attached to him but it might be best all round. Not much call for drakes in my area :( most people use them for meat or feeding other animals. We would be gutted if that happened to him.

I guess its keep him separate for now and see what happens

Yeah I would do that and see if he mellows put in the fall time! Every male is different mine was way to violent so only time will tell if he will mellow out towards the females
