Dream Flock

I am never doing ducks again! Not a good option for an urban chicken person. So noisy and messy! My Pekin is an awesome layer though - 6 eggs a week and they are huge!

I had a small flock of Pekin ducks in the country once and sold them because they were driving me crazy. They were VERY friendly, which was cute at first. They could see the house from the pond. Anytime I set foot outside they came running! They followed me everywhere, quacking as loud as they could.

Now that I look back, though, I was just a kid at the time and I did not feed them duck feed. They ate scratch grain and whatever they could find in the pond. Maybe they were just trying to tell me something...

Naw, mine does the same thing and she has duck feed and all sorts of treats. As soon as she hears my back door open she will go off, sounds like a goose some days! She is the friendliest of all my birds by far, will come up for pats and "frisk" you for treats...and given the option will totally follow you around and quack all day. I had guessed she was a girl because she talked so much - but I thought my Swedish Black was going to be a boy since she was so quiet comparatively - really surprised me to find her first egg!

My dream addition would be some Heritage Dominiques (instead of hatchery Doms), and I'd LOVE a short term pure Black Ameraucana rooster to put over my existing pullets, and he would produce BSL olive eggers from the Dom pullets!
