Dream will soon come true.

Agree with N F C, Chanteclers are the best breed for Canadian weathers. I would've picked them but I only want bantams and they are only available in white in bantam. In standard there's white, partridge, buff. If I ever come across buff bantams in Canada I'll get them.

I plan to get bantam Wyandottes, which is probably the second best cold hardy breed.

Whatever you decide, have fun with them!
Thanks for the recommendation. The closer I get to actually buying my chickens I'll probably look into breeds a bit more, I do love buff Orpingtons, I want something friendly that I can pet, hug and snuggle too. I am also going to be building the coop into the garage and putting in insulation in the walls and everything so maybe I can make something warm enough for Buff's and on the really, REALLY bad days I can just stick a diaper on em' and bring them inside to warm their bums by the fire.

I'm in the same boat as you or I should say, the boat behind you. Moved from Ontario to Quebec but will be working in Ontario. We might move to a house in May and I might be allowed 3 hens. Our son is 9 months old. Buff Orpingtons are a great breed, the only thing is they have single combs which make them more prone to frostbite but you are only getting hens so their combs will be smaller.
Is your new house back in Ontario? Iroquois Falls is actually pretty close to the Quebec boarder, there is even some signs in the town purely in French, no idea what they say though!! Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to build a coop with insulation into my garage so I'm hoping that will be warm enough or bring them inside the house sometimes on bad days. I also have a 11 month old so that's awesome there is other people with babies on here.

:welcome
Glad you joined our flock! We are sure you'll love it here, so pull up a roost!! I'm so glad that since you are moving, you can complete your dream of getting your chooks!
Thank you so much I'm very excited, my current city banned backyard chickens only a year ago, right after I moved here! Very frustrating.

We are looking in both ON and QC- QC has the $8 a day daycare and even though property taxes are higher it is better financially with the daycare. But I am immigrating from the US to Canada and the government is saying that Quebec has their own immigration system I would need to apply separately to so we might have to move to Ontario for a while before we can move back to Quebec. The French can be a challenge, I am using Rocket French which helps. There is also some free French classes in the south of Quebec which I might take when Keith goes to daycare next fall. Good idea with insulating and diapers! I might do something like that with my hens when the weather gets really bad.
