Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

We did not get any snow either, just some sprinkles, but man is it cold here--32F this morning when I left to take the youngest to school at 8:15 am. BRRRR

Today is an actual desk job day, boo. I have the fire going and am just plugging away, thankfully only one meeting at 10 am and then just busy work.

Going to start some vegetable stock in the crockpot here in a minute and then pressure can it up probably tomorrow. I have tons of squash to do something with too :)

Today is DH's bday so I will make a coffee cake for him (his favorite) for when he gets home tonight. Not sure what to make for dinner, he said it was 'just another day', lol. I feel it too, as I get older it just isn't as special.

Excited for almost 70 this weekend, will be nice for the chicks hatching!

If your hen is a good mama, the chicks will do fine
in the cold. they will run around and then run back
to snuggle under her when they get cold. the chicks
are hardier than people give them credit for.
soup sounds like a good idea today. I think there is
some chili left.
if this cold weather keeps up, i just might do some baking.
that helps warm up the house, too.

I think she will be-she is fierce already and HUGE (an nice big ole Brahma)

Yes, baking, I am going to do some of that too. Today through Wed look cold.

Thanks to the morning newscast, I know it's 20 degrees cold than average for this time of year. Talk about news I didn't need to know. At least it will "heat up" to about 40 later.

I really should bake today; the kitchen and I could use a warm up. Soup also sounds like a good idea. Trouble is, I usually make way too much and end up eating the leftovers for days. Some soups freeze and reheat well; some get too mushy when reheated.

Looking forward to hearing all about those soon-to-arrive Brahma chicks.

Hope your DH enjoys his coffee cake. Birthdays are less special after you collect a lot of them, but I bet he still thinks it's nice to have someone (especially you!) take note.

Holy moly Jim--that is a lot of squirrels, hopefully they are all new and not just the ones rehomed that are coming back (does that even happen?).

I agree cake or pie of my choice is great and better than most gifts
the squirrels are far away. I don't think they have
a strong homing instinct. their first instinct is to eat.
they are so busy feeding themselves, they forget
about everything else.

I think the birthday cake is my Dad's favorite part of his birthday gatherings.
He only gets his mom's Spice Cake on his birthday. It is a layer cake of cinnamon/ginger cake with a vanilla pastry cream filling and an Italian Meringue frosting. Too putsy and sweet for everyday eating. 6 cups of sugar total in the finished product.

I'm going to try to get the garden cleaned up for spring. Then I can spread the coop cleanings on the garden area to sit for the winter.
