Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

Lisa, I promise I will think kindly of you when the first flakes fall here! But I hope those are thoughts I don't have to have for a while :).

Jim, I'm a bit with Annie here -- the table saw thing would concern me, too. Heck, I'm scared of my own table saw.

Like, @Ursuline Chick, I have a hard time putting down a book. My reward for cleaning out the garden and mulching the strawberry bed today is a return to my latest read, a historical look at Queen Victoria's five daughters. Of course, watching the Yankees play shortly will best any book. Never cared for the Yankees until they wisely scooped up ex-Cub Anthony Rizzo. I gotta root for them now.

Lisa, nope I love the first snow! I was outside at 6 am in it! And took my youngest out! She was making snowballs while I did chores.

I LOVE to read. We go to the library weekly, we were just there and I got a couple Halloween mysteries. Both my girls are huge readers too. I have the time, though sometimes the TV wins bc it requires less thinking.

A table saw is a great thing. I never thought I would care about them, but the forced rebuild 17 years ago made me love power tools. Christmas of 2005 I asked Santa for a reciprocating saw. And he brought me one! I felt like Amy Carter asking for a chain saw her first Christmas in the White House. :celebrate

DH used to take DD when she was a little girl to the library every week. It is a 4 block walk from our house. It was great bonding time for them and DD was so proud of her library card, as well as it being fun to pick out your own book.

Annie has her nose in a book at some time every day.
she doesn't care much for TV.
so far we caught five squirrels. but just now there
was one on the deck eating a piece of apple. I wonder
if he stole it from one of the live traps ?
I got the gasket on the stove door. today I will put
the door back onto the stove. nephew gave me the stove.
I never used it yet. I hope it works well.
last night we went to a very rural tavern for a fish fry.
we haven't been there for over thirty years. they are open
only on Fridays from 2 to midnight. we had bluegill.
I never had bluegill in a restaurant before. it was very good.
bluegill is my favorite fish to eat with perch being a close second.
I started cutting out the pieces for the chainsaw vise i am
making. it is of my own design. there was nothing on youtube
that I could steal ideas from.
if it works like I hope, I will post pictures.
It froze here last night. we had to scrape the car
windows when we left the tavern. but the roads were
OK.. when we got almost to our driveway, our doe and
her two fawns ran across the road toward our house.
the fawns don't have spots anymore.

today, for the first time, i lit the first fire in the stove in the shop.
It quickly warmed up enough so that I didn't need more
than a sweat shirt to be comfortable.
I burned plum tree wood. I tried splitting some
with an ax. not going to try doing that again.
It does not split. the ax just gets stuck in it.
I think it would be interesting to turn some
in a wood lathe.

I hope your DH lets you use that new chainsaw. That's one (of many tools) that gives me a wee bit of concern. I should either repair or replace my Jawsaw. Or, find someone else with a chainsaw to remove some dead branches.

Jim, I'm sure I won't get to it this year, but I would like to learn how to use my mini-lathe and accompanying tools. I might ask you for pointers.

Despite the current cold, which I never appreciate, temps are predicted to return to the 70s next weekend. I need to put that out of my head and finish up my end-of-summer tasks ASAP. I managed to put away some of the yard art yesterday (mostly just my collection of birdhouses), but there is plenty left to do. That includes a replacement ramp for my senior hens' coop.

The raspberry plants I bought last week were everbearers and came with a few straggling berries attached. I ate the last lovely, red raspberry yesterday.

We are supposed to get into the upper 60s by the end of next week too! Just in time for the broody to hatch chicks next Sunday, 1 week left ;)

Lots done outside the last couple days. Today will be mowing at the property, bring some wood from property to hole to burn, take down trampoline and a couple other odds and ends. Need to plastic up some windows in the house.

Kids are off school next weekend so hopefully some outside walks and inside Halloween movies ;) need to make some popcorn balls and pumpkin bars.

I can use the basic power tools but not comfortable with anything else.

Mice have started to come into the barn and detached garage, catching them in the traps nightly. Yuck

I don't care much for TV either would rather read, though I think I need an eye exam.

I have two lathes. One is a small variable speed light duty
toyish thing. but it does work.
the other is a nice cast iron old Craftsman that I bought a
couple of years ago. I haven't set it up yet.
I haven't used a wood lathe since high school 60 years ago.
well, except for the toy one , after I repaired it for my nephew.
then he told me to keep it.
I have some picking up to do so I can plow snow when it comes.
speaking of coming. the junk man hasn't yet. maybe he is waiting
for the warm up later this week.??
my burn pile is huge. I won't burn until we have a
very good snow cover. I like an overcast day with a
slight breeze blowing to the NE. No houses for miles
that way, so the smoke won't bother anybody.
