Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

I slept until almost 5AM. must be some sort of record.
Great grandson is 1 year old already..
they are coming tonight.
tomorrow I am baking ham slices in sauce.
I borrowed my brother's meat slicer.
haven't used it yet. going to see how thin I can slice with it for sandwiches.
will slice a little thicker for the baked ham.
I was requested to make my world famous stuffing.
I would like some sweet potatoes. Will see what the master chef thinks..

Congrats on sleeping in! Animals make sure that doesn't happen often for me.

Yesterday, I woke up at 2:30 with every intention of dozing off again. But at the same instant, Dinah dog and I heard coyotes -- right through the closed windows, which meant they must be close. I flew downstairs and ran outdoors in slippers and a nightgown.

Not only were they unusually close, but they were to the south of the house, which they NEVER are. It wasn't the usual-calling-the-family-together howl, more of a yipping. I did my usual yelling and clapping routine, and things got quieter fast.

The drifts are becoming mushy in places, which makes walking out on them a real adventure. No face plants YET but I have sunk a foot or two unexpectedly on several occasions. The snow on the deck is no longer frozen solid, but I don't have anywhere to pile it if I bothered to shovel. I will just wait for melting.

Today is the last day for free shipping on seeds from Seed Savers Exchange. The offer ends at noon, and I am trying to talk myself out of buying (too many) seeds. Stay tuned to see how I fail!

my problem is that I can't go back to sleep once I wake up..
it is 7AM and Annie just went back to bed.
woose !!!
i guess we have coyotes around here. I know there are wolves.. I did see a couple of coyotes a few years ago, but they were not near us..
I have actually seen more wolves than coyotes.
this house is so tight that we can hardly hear the UPS truck when it comes.

After much wrestling between my common sense and overly ambitious dreams, I only ordered four packets of seeds: Seed Savers Lettuce Mix, Dragon Carrots, Bee's Friend Flowers and Bee Feed Flower Mix.

I outgrew my allergy to bee stings, so I am trying to make friends with all those poor pollinators that I cursed and ran from for many years. While I am hoping to eat the lettuces and carrots myself, I suspect I will just be feeding wildlife again unless I get the garden fenced better than it currently is.

Jim I've read once wolves move in the coyotes leave. Wolves will kill all coyotes they can get a hold of. Not sure which I would prefer.

We had to put one of my two remaining donkeys down 2 days ago. He had founder and it had gotten way worse. The remaining donkey keeps calling for him. I had hoped that he would understand seeing his brother was deceased, but I guess they can't reason that way.

Plans are to try him in with the goats to see if they can get along. Otherwise he has chickens and ducks for company, but it's not the same as the 25 year relationship he had with his brother. It also was a shock to me. I knew it was coming but thought we had more time.
