Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

100 pounds of blackberries!?! What exactly does someone do with that many? You could fill a whole wine cellar, couldn't you?

I need to email Dawn, who said she doesn't know much about chickens, and point out that at least she didn't feed them kitty litter :lau

Sorry about your racoon issues, Lisa. Are you still feeding it?

My chicks spent their first night in the new coop. They had been in the run for field trips that lasted a few hours, and that's all I was planning to do yesterday. But when it came time to load them up and haul them back into the house and upstairs, I decided to take the easy way and coop them.

I may have overestimated the easy part. Because I was so involved with taking care of the outdoor cats and kittens, I didn't spend as much time as I usually do socializing chicks. I regretted that last night. As soon as I would snag a chick -- all of which seemed terrified -- and pop her into the coop, she or another one would leap back out.

I finally gathered up everyone in a cardboard box and released them into the coop all at once. As soon as it gets light out, I will see how they fared in their new shelter. I am not looking forward to cleaning their indoor brooder and the surrounding mess, but it will be nice to have it all gone.

Somehow, while I was gone, both zucchini plants died. At least I didn't have to threaten folks with mountains of free zucchinis, but I wouldn't have minded getting a few more.

Grasshoppers have destroyed most everything in the garden, save the cherry tomato plants. They have eaten the tops off my red onions; that's never happened before.

New folks took over one of the Fort Dodge greenhouses and have TONS of nice, healthy plants for sale. I told them and myself that I was only looking, but I came home with three beautiful daylilies, priced at 50-percent off. I LOVE daylilies and will plant them ASAP. We had rain yesterday morning, but it looks dry for the rest of the week.

Barb I think your zucchini dying is a blessing.

I never tame my chicks. Just give them a daily treat of scrambled eggs. Bribery works good for me.

Still feeding the dang raccoon. Husband said we caught a cat again and he had his head jammed under the door and almost was strangling himself. I'm starting to get mad at this thing. Hopefully it comes in this weekend when husband can feed it some buckshot. Being shot at once didn't keep it away. I don't need my dogs tangling with it. Jam hasn't worked, and a big no to the marshmallows. This thing likes cat food. May have to give it what it wants and mange the cats.

Soon as it cools off I want to remove the tomato plants. We have enough now, so no point in keeping them going except for the one cherry tomato plant.

Success :yesss:

Had to remove the extra cat food. Cats were very hungry this morning. Went a whole 8 hours without food.

Congrats on catching your thief!

I hope your poor, famished cats recover and forgive you! Mine would be livid!!
Cats have been on constant high alert. Hopefully they can relax now, and eat freely.
Congrats!!!!
I'm so relieved. I was afraid the dogs would run across it and we'd have troubles.
