Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

up at 3 this morning. i can see a nap in my future.
38F this morning. I will watch for it to get colder. if it does, I will get out and spray the plants.
yesterday, I made a backsplash for the top shelf in the shed. drilled it full of holes and then came to a screeching halt. didn't have the correct size nut driver to finish driving in 30 lag screws. will get one today.
Annie gifted me with a garbage can for in the shed. it is huge. takes up too much room.
I will discretely replace it sometime in the future.
bro Dave came out to help me plant the pear tree. I was not at all ready for that. he will come another day.
went for fff last night. I had perch, Annie had bluegill. we went almost too late. they really loaded us up with fish. we each brought 6 pieces home.
saw another ad for pure bread dogs.
I think the people call their ad in and who ever takes the call is writing it down wrong.

Did you get those lag screws, Jim? My Chicago friends and I went to Menards yesterday, and thanks to Adam being willing to load and unload them, I have a pile of 6-foot cedar pickets in my garage.

I hope to finish covering over the old, raggedly looking lattice under the deck to match what I did on the south side last year. Ideally, that will happen before snowfall this year!

The Chicagoans always look forward to shopping at Bomgaars when they're here, so we started the day there. Later, the dogs, a chicken and a duck all got pedicures, and Adam cut down a horse stall mat to put in the geese's shelter to cover the hardware cloth that had a couple of rough breaks in it. I sure didn't want Gussie and Golly to tear up their feet and have to see the pricey vet.

Of course, since they are silly geese who don't like new things, the new flooring frightened them, and they refused to go to bed last night. I had to pick them up and push them inside.

Adam listened to me explain the concept of putting up a garage shelf. That's as far as that project went.

My friends' anniversary was Friday and they made reservations at a sushi restaurant. I'm glad they enjoyed the meal -- and the lower-than-Chicago prices; I ate hibachi vegetables and rice. Sushi has never appealed to me.

I picked what I think will be the last ripe full-sized tomato of the year, a Willie's Garden that I got at Seed Savers. Still plenty of cherry tomatoes though.

Barb I was born in Chicago and we moved here when I was 4. We have had many Chicago natives visit over the years so I can envision your company. My grandparents used to bring a car load of goodies from all the Jewish deli's, and bakery's.

Geese don't like anything new. I bet they thought you were trying to kill them with the new mat. Do they chew on them?

I tossed some pine shavings over the mat, and the geese walked nicely into their shelter last night with no arguments at all. Whew! They're not chewing on the mat -- yet.

My friends want to move to Iowa. They stay in an Air BnB in a nearby town, more of a village actually. They could stay with me when they visit, but they have a HUGE hunting dog that comes with them. My house is not big enough for Hays to rough house with my critters.

Turns out the mayor lives across the street from where they stay and invited them over Saturday night. I think he is trying to increase the town's population! He regaled them with stories about cheap housing and plied them with drinks at his home. Yup, I think he wants them to move to Jolley.

BTW, towns with happy names in Iowa -- like Jolley and What Cheer -- tend not to be thriving communities these days.

Adam didn't take the bait on building a garage shelf, but I have house guests coming next month who might. Maybe I will have enough stuff cleaned out of the garage that they can get to the wall to build the shelf?!?

Barb, the shelves can be made wider just by adding extra wood to them.
Yesterday I got a lot done. I made the slot behind the shelves into a long handle storage .
the slot is 3 1/2 " wide and extends all the way across the 7' room.
then I put wheels on the miter saw so I can move it more easily
today i want to prepare a spot to plant the potted pear tree.
the 36F temp did not kill the tomatoes and squash.
all of the grapes are gone. birds ate them.
Annie made a raspberry pie for me.
very simple recipe. make a corn flake crust
fill it with raw raspberries and top with real whipped cream.

this is what I did with the 3 1/2" slot behind the shelves.
I used 6" lag screws for spacers

grandson just stopped in for a few minutes.
he fixed my computer. now i can log into yahoo groups again,,,,and send photos.
this is the empty slots for long handled tools.
I made a backsplash and ran screws through it into the wall. the pvc tubes are spacers to keep the backsplash from tilting .
