Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

Hurray for the cat! Let the coons find their own food.

I have open windows, too, and the ceiling fan on in the living room. Haven't dragged out the window A/C in years.

I like the way Annie operates! A few years ago, I realized the county had hired a neighbor to mow the ditches, and I stealthily rescued a bunch of flowering something-or-others. Thought I was pretty slick about it -- until much later when the guy asked me how the plants were doing.

My new geraniums looked great for almost an hour yesterday. Until I discovered my beloved geese gleefully ripping off leaves and blossoms, then spitting them disdainfully onto the ground. Last year I put geraniums in the same planters in the same place, and the geese ignored them. Gussie and Golly got temporarily grounded, placed in their pen while I tried to salvage survivors and put them in a pot far away from where the geese could destroy them.

Wondered if I might have worked too long in the hot sun when I thought I saw hay moving around in the shed, right where one of the runners likes to sneak in and lay eggs. I knew it couldn't be a duckling because I pick up her eggs every day.

I gently moved the hay and spotted something that, at first glance, was the right size and color to be a rat. I didn't have to panic for long before I realized it was a nest of bunnies. Drew is laying eggs on top of baby rabbits -- who have been there long enough to grow fur! I can't block her out or Mama Bunny won't be able to get in. Also, I now trudge back to the farther shed for hay so I won't disturb those cute little rabbits that will want to eat my garden when they get older.

Still better than coyotes, who must be on vacation for the past three days.

Jim yellow delicious apples are my favorite. My husband killed my tree when he cut down the big old willow that fell on it. I haven't been the same since. I don't even seen them sold in the stores very often either.

Barb those crazy rabbits find the weirdest spots to make nests. My cats would have found that nest. How are tour cats doing? They must be getting along now?

Lisa, among the reasons I took in those stray cats was to protect yard critters after I caught one of the males "playing" with baby bunnies. The rabbits didn't survive, and the cats moved into my basement.

My senior girl, Ziva, no longer spends her days hiding from the newer cats, but she still isn't happy about having them in her home. There are still LOUD squabbles, and Ziva protects her food with a snarling vengeance.

On the plus side, no mice came into my house over the winter.

Had a wind advisory yesterday and another one today. There is a metal roof over the goats shelter-pen and feeding area, and when I went out to feed last night, I could see and hear metal flapping in the wind.

I couldn't find a hex bit to reattach pole barn screws, so I steadied a wooden ladder against the chain link side panel, pulled out a loose pole barn screw, removed its collar and put the collar around a much-longer construction screw that I fastened into the supporting wooden beam. It's a temporary fix that I hope holds out through today at least.

Every day here is an adventure.

we sat through four hours of tornado warnings
there were a few touch downs , but nothing real close.
the blossoms did not get blown off of the apple tree.
I put the 5 tomatoes under the overhang on the garage. moved ollie to his spot under the lean to behind the garage. so Annie could put the car into the garage.
It didn't seem to rain too hard nor did the wind blow too hard. our house is pretty sturdy so we don't feel the weather.
yesterday, I planted a tub of beets. had what was left in a packet of seeds from i don't know how long ago. I planted 7 dozen seeds. and there were still more in the packet. it was like the loaves and fishes. It seemed like I was not taking any seeds out at all,.
I did some research on basil. it is a good companion plant for just about anything in the garden. claims that it repels mites and other bugs. attracts pollinators .
I have a packet of seeds. I think I will plant a few in each of the tubs. I have to check if they are ok for tomatoes.
the tomatoes have doubled in size already.
I better get the poles in the buckets so I can tie them up. I usually wait too long and then they hang over the side and are hard to straighten up.
Lisa, the storm came from your direction, how did you fare ?

Jim most everything went around us last evening. Good to hear you didn't get anything too bad.

I hear what you're saying about beet seeds. So many in the pack. Did you know each seed will become 2-6 seedling? So definitely like the loaves and fishes.

Barb thank you for the kitty update. Cats sure are complicated. As a kid I always thought everyone got along because they all showed up for the free milk at milking time. I guess that was just a truce for treats.

I wish mine would call a "truce for treats." They've been indoor cats for about a year but still argue as if each morsel of food could be their last.

Glad to hear everyone survived weird weather. I'm hoping to be done with high winds. Sometimes, it felt as if the house would blow off its foundation the last couple of days.

I'm also hoping the extreme temperature drop (only low 40s last night) hasn't impeded the garden too much. My green beans were just popping out of the ground and the newest row of onions is coming up. Hope you're right about the basil, Jim. Anything that repels pests is all right with me.

Speaking of pests, coyote break time is over. I know that it's not unusual for a coyote that's being chased to stop and look back at its pursuer. I am more than a little offended that yesterday's had the audacity to LAY DOWN and look back at me. That ended with a few hard-thrown field stones lobbed at its head.

I've been reading Bethany Brookshire's book "Pests: How Humans Create Animal Villains." She says coyotes learn to recognize individual people -- those who will ignore them, those who might feed them, those who will haze them and run them off. "My" coyotes seem to be slow learners.

Barb, your coyotes have you pegged and well trained :lau
Yesterday my beans started to come up, they beat the peas,
there are enough up to make out all of the rows.
I have to put stakes in the tomato buckets. SOON
have to cut this short. I am sitting here typing in my PJ"s and Annie just went out to back the car out of the garage.
later....jiminwisc....
