Dreaming of Spring Gardening in the Middle of a Wisconsin winter part 2

Happy Thanksgiving

Tiny specks of snow began falling about 3:30 yesterday afternoon as I was putting poultry to bed early. Fine snow -- not even big enough to be flakes nor graupel -- continued to fall all night.

At 3:45 this morning, I bounded out of bed (okay, more like rolled, really) and headed out to shovel the deck and ramp for my dogs' comfort. So, far there's only about 2-3 inches of the predicted 13. Fingers crossed, the weather folks got it really wrong this time!

Yesterday's snow came down lightly and wasn't blowing around. I was beginning to believe this wouldn't be as awful as predicted.

My hopeful optimism was short-lived. The snow continued until 9 p.m., then roaring winds took over, growling outside my bedroom windows and shaking them in their frames.

Before I could take the dogs out this morning (3:42 a.m.), I had to clean drifts created from the official 9.7 inches of snow. Yes, that was a little less than predicted, but still not good. I only managed a path in front of the door -- so it would completely open -- and down one half of the ramp to the yard.

Aided by 18 mph winds -- according to the Weather Channel -- and a temperature in the teens, it felt like -4 degrees and my back felt like I'd been shoveling for hours as the snow is now crusting over.

Were it not for all the critters that depend on me, I would not leave the house again.
