Dried up dead shrew

ok so im doing a story time i bought hens 2 were POL (point of lay) and it had been a month and only there was an egg every 5 days so i thought maybe the feed had to be changed meaning maybe they couldnt get enough nutrition so i changed it a couple of days later i reach in to grab an egg and see something ever so slightly poking up the dried up grass i use for bedding in the nest box at first i thought it was one of those eggs that dont have a shell (i dont know why i thought that) so i used a stick to poke around and guess what i found a dead dried up shrew it couldnt have been that long since we had just put this nesting box in and it had nothing in it so i assume that he was the culprit since we have never seen a snake near or at our property ever since that day ive been getting a pleasant 1 egg a day

I'm not even sure how to react to this ! It's a weird, funny, kind of gross, (and for some reason satisfying) story. Congrats on getting eggs now.

They don't eat eggs.
He probably starved to death in your nest actually.

Most birds take a day or two off every week from laying. Currently some of my birds are starting their molts so I'm getting a few less eggs. Good luck with your birds and have fun...

its winter where i am and its going to be spring in september i also bought a year old hen 2 months ago im not sure if she is saving her energy for winter and not laying so will she start laying in spring im hoping to hatch out some chicks shes a wyandotte bantam golden with black lace
