I have an elderly Americana hen who has a droopy belly, she still lays occasionally and feeds and drinks well. She is quite active and still likes to go outside and scratch around. Her belly is quite soft and doesn't seem to hurt at all. Does anyone know if anything can be done, or what has caused it?

You should pout this in the Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures forum. I also advise to put a picture of her in the thread for them to get a better idea of what may be wrong. It also just might be old age that is doing it.

Sorry I put this in the wrong place, and thank you. She is at least 8 years old as she was mature when I got her.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Are you talking about her abdomen? If it is like a water balloon, this could be Ascites, or what is called Water Belly. The outcome of this is never good and generally they need to be put down. There are threads here on BYC on draining the belly, but usually the liquid returns.

Definitely post in our emergency section for more help with this. Good luck with her and we do welcome you to our flock!

Thank you. Her belly isn't tight, but I will see how she goes. She seems quite happy right now, so will keep an eye on her, and if she deteriorates I will cull her. She has had a good life, and is quite elderly. Kind of like me!
