Hi all, I have some spitzhauben chicks that are 5 weeks old and a couple have gotten sick and died. they just stop eating and drinking. They look sleepy and no energy. I was using pine shavings, but lost one chick, so I switched to sand (bagged play-sand from Home Depot) They seemed to be doing better, but I just lost another chick today and now another one is not looking good. I am feeding them Dunmore medicated chick feed, grit, occasional watermelon, oranges and zucchini. I've also given them save-a-chick electro lights and probiotics in their water. I did try to hand feed them water with a dropper, but they seemed like they could not swallow well and gapped ? Any ideas? Please help me save my babies.

At this age many chicks can get coccidosis. It is highly contagious and can kill in a few days. The description of symptoms seems to fit, and sometimes they develop blood in stools. Corid is the drug of choice and comes in a couple of forms:powder--use1/2 teaspoonful per gallon of water, and liquid 2 teaspoonsful per gallon. Treat all chicks for 5 days.

Look up info on Coccidiosis, some symptoms are runny/watery poop(may or may not contain blood),fluffed feathers, lethargic. Cocci is a parasitic infection of the intestinal tract. Kills very fast. Purchase Corid(amprolium),Dosage for Corid powder is 1/2 tsp per gallon of water. Dosage for Corid liquid is 2 tsp per gallon of water, treat ALL chicks for 5 days,do not give vitamins during treatment(interferes with medication)give vitamins after treatment. Make sure medicated water,is the only water chicks drink.

Thanks, I'll get some medication tomorrow and let you all know how it goes! I thought the medicated food was to help with that, but I guess it's a pretty strong bug.
Chicks on medicated feed, can still get Coccidiosis. There is a small amount of Amprolium in medicated feed, but not enough to help with an overload of Coccidiosis.
