I have a sicilian buttercup, born Apr 29. She was fine up until this morning when I noticed she kept shutting one eye. I went in 5 minutes ago and she was sleeping on the coop floor, very unusual behavior for her during the day. She is really lethargic. I gave her some pedialyte. It's been in the 80s today and everyone else seems hot but fine. Any ideas?

Here she is - she perked up for the pic when I turned the light on and then went all droopy again as soon as it went off.

Sounds like an upper respiratory infection. My hens started out the same way. I recommend Tylan antibiotic powder. You can mix it with their water and treat the whole flock. Your feed store might carry it if not I buy my Tylan soluble at firststatevetsupply.com

Depending on the number of chickens you have mix 1/2 teaspoon powder with 1/2 gallon water. Make sure this is the only water they have so they have to drink the medicated water. Mix new batch every day and use for 7 days. You can PM me if you have any questions.

Poor girl....hope she is well soon.

The eye appears cloudy in the pic. Is it cloudy in person when you look at her?

Also, does she seem to have any trouble standing up on her own?

I didn't read anything in the OP that sounded respiratory.

How is she eating/drinking? How are her stools? Any signs of egg laying yet?

It's not cloudy in person - I think that was a product of the flash. I've got her separated from the rest of the flock so I'll check what the first stool looks like (I don't remember seeing any abnormal ones in the coop). She ate some oatmeal/pedialyte/yogurt pretty heartily. She is the smallest of the group save one mottled houdan and I'm wondering if she is lowest on the pecking order/just wasn't eating enough? She is laying down in a relaxed position with her head up at the moment so I am not sure if that just her being relaxed or having trouble standing on her own. What can that be a sign of? Nobody's started laying eggs yet - this is my first group of chickens.

Purpletree - what else should I look for in a potential respiratory infection? Does anyone know the consequences for treating that just to be safe? Is there any ill-effect if they don't have a respiratory infection? Is there any routine stuff to treat other than worming? Thanks...
