This is our first batch of chicks, so we're still learning.
Of the original 25, we lost 4 within the first 7 days. All of them looked droopy, puffed up and lethargic. They were also noticeably smaller than the rest, as if they weren't growing as quickly.
10 days now after those original 4 deaths, one has started showing the same signs: lack of development, droopy wings, and lethargy. I have noticed meat colored droppings. My research suggests coccidiosis. Could it be something else?
We've separated it, but are not sure how to treat it. We are trying to be as organic as possible, but we don't really want to lose any more chicks. If I try treating with Sulmet do I treat just the sick one or the entire flock?
I wanted to try the deep litter method, so I've just been adding new shavings on top of old, maybe once a week. Could this be contributing to the problem?
Part of me wants to let nature take it's course with the belief that I'll end up with a stronger flock in the end. But the other part of me wants to avoid any unnecessary suffering (especially on my kids who help care for them).
Any help is appreciated.
