my four chicks ( 3 days old ) seem completely content so I probably shouldn't even worry....but just wanted some feedback.

i have a large brooder, so one end is a happy 95 degrees and they have plenty of room to run around in cooler temps. which they have been doing. to eat, drink, explore, jump and play.

my question is...while they are napping, they remain under the light and sometimes they are flat out with their wings opened up and legs sprawled. very quiet. this is ok, correct? i assume they are just getting super comfy.

Mine do that once in awhile, only their legs don't sprawl out. Mine lay on thier sides and extend their wings, but I believe it's normal. As long as their acting normal, no odd behavior, I think they're fine. How old are they?

Mine do that too, and pant sometimes. I thought they were too warm but they could go to a cooler area if they wanted. They are 4 weeks. I know, it looks scary!!

Mine do that occasionally, although usually the have their legs tucked under them. They will sometimes stretch one leg and one wing out then snooze, but not for very long, like 30sec-1 minute max.

I would be very concerned if mine were panting. I was just reading an article yesterday on brooder management, and it said the reason we keep them at a consistent temperature it to avoid their bodies having to do any work regulating their own temp. whether it be generating their own heat or cooling themselves off via panting. Any energy they expend doing either of those things takes away from their growth. I would definitely lower them temp a bit if mine were panting, but that is just me...cheers!

3 days old. So I know the temp is not too hot. Thanks for your input!

Yes, I will raise their heat lamp when I get home today. It's not all the time, but I just happened to see one doing it last night. It was really warm in NJ last week, then it got cold again so I lowered the heat lamp a bit.

Panting isn't good, I hear. Mine aren't panting. Just sprawling out. How old are your chicks?

Yes, mine take cat naps as well. Then off they go to get another bite to eat. Fun to watch!

Baby chicks sleep in odd positions. My 4 week old sleeps upside down in my hand
