Hello chicken friends,
One of our new pullets has decided to start laying! Her eggs are small so far, smaller than a ping pong ball maybe? I'm pleased to see they look fully formed and the shells look hard. I've not opened one yet. Such cute little eggs. It's possible two pullets started laying, as it's been two consecutive days of little eggs. I'm a little surprised, as I wasn't expecting them at 17 weeks.

Upon checking the nest today, day two of tiny eggs, I saw a drop of dried blood near the nest box opening. It's been five years since we started new hens. Is this normal as their little bodies adjust to something large leaving the vent?

I looked everyone over. No one has any visible injuries. From the tiny particles of feather on the little egg, it was one of the five chocolate orpingtons. There is no visible damage to any vents, but "chickens got back", as 9 of 10 are orpingtons so the butt fluff makes seeing vents difficult without wrestling them.

Is a small blood drop near a new layer normal, or do I need to start investigating chocolate butts for issues?

In the bloody egg article, some of the more experienced members said that blood when new layers started laying was normal, do I wouldn’t be concerned.
