I have heard that....and some people charge high fees just to insure that the people are serious!!! I was trying to rehome a 7 lb pomeranian and one person told me to be careful because some people use the small dogs for baiting...I was like WHAT!!?? So now it looks like I am gonna try to keep him.

Bait animals

"Bait" animals are used to test a dog's fighting instinct, and these animals are often mauled or killed in the process.[citation needed] Trainers obtain bait animals from several sources: wild or feral animals, animals obtained from a shelter, or in some cases, stolen pets.[7] Sometimes the animals are also obtained through "free to a good home" ads. According to news reports compiled by the National Humane Society, the snouts of bait dogs are wrapped with duct tape to prevent them from injuring dogs being trained for fighting. Other animals, such as cats and rabbits are also reported to be used as bait animals.[citation needed] Experts have said small dogs, kittens, and rabbits are more at risk of being stolen for bait than larger animals.[citation needed]

The real idea of baiting is to place an object, any object that will keep the dogs focus on it and place it in front of them while they are on a treadmill being conditioned for their match. The benefit of this is that it keeps the dog running longer than it would normally without the bait.

I had no clue about the baiting thing....it is so sad...and I get frustrated with humane society charging $$150 for a cat but I understand why now...... (I have been looking for a long hair cat at a decent price and is darn near impossible to find...I am allergic to cats except some long hairs like Persians.)

I don't want to fill this thread with negative talk but thought it might need to be mentioned about the "free thing".

There are lots of good folks around....maybe a friend or relative want a new friend? Anyways good luck!

Thanks you too!!! Nah I don't think it was too negative. I only found about the baiting thing today as well. I had a persian growing up..Tuffy Tuffskins, what a great cat. I have 3 cats now but they are all rescues..just your everyday reg kitties. This pup here that chevygirl has is adorable hopefully he'll find a good home.

I am thrilled to inform you that the puppy has a home!

I am out of town for work this week, but a lady came over with her kids Tuesday night to meet my DH and the puppy. She and her kids loved the puppy instantly and decided to take him home! I am soooo happy that he has found a loving home! Thanks to everyone for trying to help me find him a home!

Great that Adorable Puppy found a home. How strong you must be to see that absolutely cute face & not keep him.

I heard of the 'bait' thing from Animal Planet. I LOVE Animal Cops & sadly they see the results of sickos who do that. I've also heard of how pet bunnies are taken under the premise as a pet & are fed to snakes.

But it's so rewarding to see the Animal Criminals brought to justice.

Although it never seems they are punished enough.

My dog was a bait dog...she is a mix of pit and shar-pei...guess she didn't turn out mean enough (very submissive even now). She has bite scars all over her neck and chest...

I walked dogs at the pound for a while, so they let me have her...she was a mess, skinny as heck, scabby, and kennel cough for good measure.

So anyhow I was walking her about 2 weeks after i got her and some lady stops, looks at me and says, "you people make me sick"
That psycho actually though i had done that to her! Dumb poo! She was wearing a cute brand new harness and had shiny neosporin on all of her wounds...oh well!

I'm glad you found the pup a home...i've re-homed several drop offs and it feels really good, doesn't it?

Awww, I'm so glad you were able to rescue her! Yes, it felt wonderful to know that he found a new home!

Oh and I just learned today who dropped the stray puppy and kittens at our house... My sister in law!!!! She found them in the empty house on one of their family farms when she stopped there to shut the front door (it keeps coming open even though they shut it and lock it...). So, she brought them to our house. Nice of her, huh? I don't mind that she dropped them off, but could she have called and let us know? Weird. Oh well.

They have good homes, so all's well that ends well!
