Dropping pit under food and water

I'm planning my coop and reading storys guide. He shows a dropping pit under the roostand the food and water. Has anyone done this?

I thought it was a great idea because I plan to have both ducks and chicks.

Would it just be a wire floor? If so how small would it have to be, I don't want poop building up on it.

You sure don't. What builds up underneath it is BAD ENOUGH. We use 1/2 inch hardware cloth on our brooder pen floors. Big enough for food, and poo to fall thru but not little feet. I was just thinking today about building something underneath the pens so the bulk of it all would collect at one central location. Our pens are 6 x3x6 so I stay busy cleaning underneath, mainly to keep the flies down.
