Drought Tolerant and hen friendly plants

Hi all! we are in the process of building a chunnel from the run to the garden. just pulled up 3 lantana plants because they wouldn't leave them alone. Want to add some plants or shrubs around the chunnel that the hens will leave alone, provide some shade, and are drought tolerant (I live in the Central Valley in California!) and maybe have some nice appeal to them. thanks!

I like privet bushes, though they get big if not trimmed, the flowers smell nice and my birds eat the berries.
