I can tell you ... it CAN happen. I lost one of my newly hatched chicks to drowning in the water dish, and I even had marbles in it. After that, I added even more! I just removed them yesterday. The remaining chicks are 1 and 2 weeks old now. I use the quart jar with red dish, common, waterer. How does it happen? It is because they fall asleep (standing up or laying, either) and their little head falls right in.
