Drunk raccoon

It's quite common for a variety of animals to get drunk off of fermenting apples at this time of year. And like any drunk they are prone to odd behavior and may even collapse under the tree in a stupor. No reason to be alarmed by this coon as long as you have your birds in a secure run/coop at night so they are safe while sleeping. A wide awake and sober chicken can elude a drunk raccoon

Raccoons don't catch prey by chasing it. They prey on birds that are sleeping and/or trapped in an enclosed area where they can't move away from the raccoon's reach through the wire.

Raccoons will come out during the day without hesitation especially if food is available. And they will hunt, chase down, pounce, climb fences and do all manners of things to catch a chicken.
Make no mistake that they are pernicious predators. Sorry that you are facing this ChlorophyllChicks. Hopefully it will go away, but be very cautious.

If you are in a residential neighborhood, just call animal control. They will come get it. If it is out in the day and acting disoriented, fermented apples or not, that is abnormal. Call animal control and see what they can do, be sure to mention the strange behavior. We had a rabies outbreak in our town this summer, skunks, racoons and foxes were the carriers. And, a raccoon actually ate two toes off one of my hens while she was in her coon-proof steel cage. They are not nice to chickens. We live one block from downtown!

Raccoons are everywhere.

not really... raccoon's are mainly a north america thing.. they were introduced to japan and europe by accident and in some cases on purpose... but there are still many areas of europe where they are NOT present

Like said above - the raccoons start getting more active as Winter arrives, but still, if he's hanging around and acting wierd in the middle of the day, it's probably not the apples. Time to shoot, or if you can't shoot, trap and drown.
