DUBBING, anyone?

A frozen comb is much more painful for the bird than dubbing is. Dubbing is over in a few seconds, a frozen comb can take weeks to heal.

Not everyone can keep their fowl in a heated coop, so if you can't, dubbing is a viable option. If you get a severe case of frostbite, you might change your mind on dubbing as it can get quite nasty. It really doesn't bother the chickens to dub them, and will keep frostbite from occurring. JMO

Hello, My husband has expereance in dubbing,
First make sure your surgical scissors,( could be reg scicciers) Are very sharp, and cleaned with alcohol.
Have string ready in case u need to stitch some aeras.
Ok, First, put the birds legs in ice water for a few minutes, this helps with less bleeding from the comb.
When you cut the comb go from face back to the end,
When you are done keep them in cool area becouse if they get to hot it will bleed more.

The act of dubbing can get an animal injured if not done by a person who is experienced. Roosters will not bleed a lot, or sometimes not bleed at all, if the dubbing is done properly and the nerve is not cut. To avoid perfuse bleeding, you should choose a cool day for dubbing and use really sharp scissors.

you should cover the rooster completely in a damp towel and take your time to cut and decide how much to cut the comb. There is a natural line that runs along the comb of a rooster. It is always a better idea if you cut just above that line to give it a natural look. We dunk the roosters head in to cold water, We hold there feet in ice water for a few minutes.
Hope this helps u, If u have any ?, u can pm me.

Nice dubbing jobs on those birds!

Are the legs placed in the cold water so that once they are taken out the blood rushes to the legs for warming rather than to the comb?

You DO need to consider that the comb is the thermoregulator of the bird. Heat exits from the comb during the summer months. THAT being said...if you live in the North and summer is not as hot as it is in OK...by all means! Dubbing is a viable means of keeping your birds safe and healthy!

I don't dub my birds because it would be a DQ for my breed. Kudos to you for researching!

Thank you, That is the reason they are put in ice water first, and dunk there heads in for a couple seconds. You are right also about the temp. but thats why I say doing it in a cool temp, like even near a AC , if can.
My husband grew up on dubbing in PR, so he knows about the temps.

The Cajun Yankee Poultry site is one of the sites I researched. I can see that there are some who think it inhumane to dub, but some of the others are aware that the act of dubbing can be a very human act indeed, to keep the birds from suffering needless pain/infection/etc. The reason I have been requesting advice, like I stated initially is, I don't want to see my birds suffer from frostbite - none of us do, & it is never intentional. I do want to make an informed decision, tho and so those who are experienced/knowledgeable in this area help me toward my goal, and I thank you for that. Hearing of other peoples experiences with dubbing, ie.. what has worked, not worked, 'wished I'd have known before hand...', etc. helps me decide if this will be in the 'best interest' of my birdsFor those who think it 'mean' ... I do not take this lightly, I am not looking to 'mutilate' my birds. I just want to be sure that this is the right thing to do...after all, ya can't just glue them back on later.... So, THANK YOU to EVERYONE who has left comments ( and who will leave more comments on the subject of DUBBING ).
