So, as a newbie, I obtained two D'Uccle chicks. They've only ever lived with each other and no one else. They've received top notch care and nutrition. One of them who I've a always believed to be a pullet is doing rooster things. S/he is crowing, but I also heard hens can crow too. It is colored and acts like a hen but I caught it crowing with the other one who is definitely a cockerel.

I've done some research and I've found that raising birds in such small groups could cause them to grow at a speedy pace and develop more quickly. Also, I've never been able to find a picture of a Mille Fleur D'Uccle rooster colored like a hen.

I'm so confused! Can someone help me please?!?

The darker one is my known rooster and the lighter one is the pullet(??).

It's a roo! It is very rare that a hen will crow, and look at that comb! (Also note how long and upright the tail is) Very pretty cockerel you have :)

With those combs, both are cockerels. The lighter one probably just has to molt into the rusty coloration, and is a bit slower to develop.
Also he does have noticably darker patches on his wings so maybe he is just a light colored bird.

Chirps, the lighter one, has very rounded feathers which is another thing that throws me off.

To me, Chirps and Salsa look absolutely nothing alike. Besides, I absolutely can *not* find a D'Uccle rooster colored that lightly.

It's actually very rare for hens to crow. And if one does end up crowing, it's usually a much older hen taking the role of a rooster when one isn't present. Crowing at such a young age means rooster. I had a polish and blue andalusian that grew up together. The BA was 100% cockerel at six weeks. I had hopes for the polish til he started crowing with the BA at a little over 8 weeks.

I think it's just taking longer to feather out. It's crowing. :hide Very rarely an established hen will crow when there's no rooster. Rarely. It's my understanding that pullets don't crow. I'm sorry. It took me a long time to accept my mille fluer d'uccle was a rooster. :(
