D'uccle Thread

There is a D'Uccle Breeder in Oregon that posts quite a bit on here. I think she is called Lorilyn Farms and she has very pretty birds! As for the lice/mite questions, I had a few battles with the nasty critters and yes, some birds get them and some seem not to or have very few. I have heard it is because some have better grooming habits than others, but I don't know if that is true.

That is her BYC name? If so, thank you sooooo much!!!

Your chickens are the best Paris! I love your berry picking videos! That looks like so much fun!
How hard is it for you to get them in and out of their kennel?
not hard at all, in fact the Mille fleur pattern ones (Tuffy and Bitty) sleep inside every night in a kennel. I tried chicken diapers but they hated them to sleep in. all 4 of those are hard core pets, so very used to me doing anything to them. at night all i have to do is tell Bitty 'go to your kennel' her brother has to be put in, it is the reverse in the morning - Tuffy gets out first and I have to go get Bitty out. if you have lots of bedding (straw in my case) they really arent reluctant to go in, Antoine even went back in and started making a nest while I was picking. i handle most of my birds a lot as babies but they do develop personalities (especially when I get a crap head roo out of a sweet baby). Alpha and Antoine just happened to get really attached to me, despite them being raised en masse with the rest of them. Tuffy and Bitty were hand raised yet are so spoiled they don't want my attention like Alpha and Antoine. They also don't listen as well. They do , however, behave better in the house and if I give them a towel to sleep on they will usually stay on it all night. Here is another video of the spoiled ones.

many people give food scraps to their chickens, this includes chicken. I gave my girls the left over bones from fried chicken dinners or turkey and chicken carcasses. there is no known prion disease in poultry so the practice is safe. the hens would break up the bones which gives them extra calcium. they are ultimate omnivores, I used to have a hen I witnessed catching, killing and eating mice! (she was a LF -delaware)

I give my chickens all table scraps:) And I am now vegetarian, so they will get no meat now!

One day I saw one of my hens zipping across the yard with something hanging from her beak with other chickens in hot pursuit. I ran over to see what all the fuss was about and she had the remnants of a long dead baby wild bird. I took it away because of the "ick" factor, but I am sure she was going to devour it. She thought she had a treasure! They really are like little dinosaurs.

And yes, I believe the Oregon D'Uccle breeder's BYC name is Lorilyn Farms, hope you can find her. It says she is from the Rogue River Valley, not sure if you are close to her or not....

Ew...Yeah, birds eating other birds I think is bad and should be stopped, poor baby bird, that would be a time when my mom would say "Chickens are so gross and bad, I like ducks." XD While I would go out 5 minutes later and pet them XD
