D'uccle Thread

How often do your hens lay? I have 1 hen that we got last spring and I was told she was hatched in fall. Since we got her i dont think we have even gotten a dozen eggs. When she lays its a big shock to us, lol. Is there anything we can do to get her to lay more?

My early spring chicks haven't started laying. I'm hoping it will be soon. I don't know what can be done to get a hen to lay more often or regular.

OH, I am so sad! I'm darn sure a hawk got my favorite half grown rooster, as I heard it screeching this evening, and found piles of feathers and guts in a straight line in the yard, then one corner where it obviously ate my poor boy. PLUS one of my older hens who was looking a little wimpy the last few days died today of something. I found her dead at the bottom of the chicken ramp. Since we got goats I've lost 2 chickens to some sort of 'illness'. So now I can't let my little d'uccle teens run around the yard while I'm not there anymore.

I really hate having to keep them in the pen, but until the hawk finds different hunting grounds, I'm going to have to.

could they have picked up some sort of parasite from the goats? if the chickens are feeling a little light and losing weight i wouldn't be surprised if that could be the culprit. if your chickens have been in the area of the goats they could have brought something with them.

eta: if you can, get the state or local vet out there to test the birds that have died. you don't want to risk your NPIP certification if it is something that can be contagious or transmitted to the offspring!

I thought of that too, so I dosed them all with ivermectin last night, and plan to worm the goats this weekend. I'm so bummed! This is the worst part of owning chickens, is when hawks eat them or they die of some unknown reason. But now, with the hawk problem, I may end up selling my Mille fleurs, since I'll have to keep them penned. Then, I'll just keep the porcelains under tighter reins.

teddiliza i am so sorry. we have had chickens attacked by things many times. A yr ago my pair was attacked by a raccoon and the hen had her shoulder ripped of(which grew back and looks like nothing ever happened) and the roo had a toe ripped of and had his leg broken(some how we think his toe grew back because he doesnt have one missing anymore). About a month ago our oegb hen had her head ripped of. So i know how u feel about your little boy.

If I did this right you'll see a photo of a very nice SQ White roo. He's not mine and I'm not sure he's still for sale but I could find out for you if you're interested.

I'd take him in a heartbeat but I don't have any white hens or know where to get any that would be SQ. Anybody know where to find any SQ White hens?

i lost my last d'uccle pullet to an animal raid over a month ago.

i'm sure it was some sort of weasel but maybe a raccoon from the destruction pattern. she didn't get torn apart-got trampled from everyone else during the commotion. and i have a huge coop that i just don't understand why everyone had to rush to one side/corner of the coop! my little Blue was a sweet thing and my favorite to take into the garden!

the one girl (banty cochin) that survived nearly being torn apart has done well on her healing. though her neck looks like it was partially de-sleeved (skin and feathers missing/pulled back), and one of her wings was dislocated/torn ligaments from the join. she still won't pull her wing fully to her body but she has full function in it. her chatty personality came back after 2 weeks in the house. she was frightened to death to go back out to the coop last week but she had a nice companion that helped her transition back in! i just wish it was my d'uccle that was a friend of her's that went back out with her.

i've since found another d'uccle to put in with Blue's brother so here's hoping i will get my own d'uccles in a few more months! the new girl-Bella, is sweet but just not as tame as Blue was. she's such a small pullet at this time so i think it will just take some time for her to grow out and gain some confidence around everyone else in the coop. I was told she was from a hatchery so i'm not expecting much on her color quality till she goes through her adult molt.
