D'uccle Thread

I do not know if either one are show Q but would love to know how they measure up even if they are still fairly young.

hatched September 26th this year.

that was my roo, ^ and below is my hen she has always been a bit slower to develop than my roo so I think she may get more speckles later.

Sabin is the roo and Midge is my hen

Some of the chicks have poo stuck around their bottoms. I've tried soaking it in warm water and cleaning that area but it is too stuck on. Will they be ok if I leave it and just make sure it doesn't cake up or what can I do?
Did they make it????
@ Everyone: I went into the coop this afternoon and a white leghorn hen was in the corner, dead. She was my healthiest and one of the best layers. She had no sign of attack, blood, or bites. She was fine. Could it have been a disease?
Probably not, but keep an eye on the droppings of your birds, (to look for anything different, some diseases show first in the droppings) Look them over, just to be sure, for lice........Mites will often not be seen during the day, for that look for pale combs and the birds acting "tired" or "off". I have links in my siggy to help with diagnosing disease if something crops up, also you can PM me and i will try my darndest to help, i'm no expert but i do know a bunch as i've read a ton! I have treated mine for 3 years now, so some of the common things i may have dealt with.
I also snagged a lovely young Chocolate Bantam Cochin at the show, to introduce (for the fun of it) that color into a project pen of d'Uccles. So much fun, so much time to wait....!
Please keep us updated! I've been dying to get a chocolate......... Did you put the choc. with a millie, or a porcelain??????? Is it for sure chocolate, or is it possible dun? (Dun breeds like blue, choc. breeds like lavender)

the cockerel i would say is pet quality. he already has way to much white on him and in my experience they only get even more white as they mature and with each molt. the pullet has sparse middle toe feathering and i believe that the feathering on the legs should be a bit thinker. they are good lawn ornaments :D

But they are still young. You won't know until they have gotten their adult feathers.

True actual Chocolate - Pure English Bantam Orpington. I think I said Cochin before, oops! I'm extremely short on Mille Fleurs (one pullet only

) so I'm going to put him with a couple Porcelain hens in the spring. There are a couple breeders here whom I've been talking with, and I'm getting more chicks from them in the spring - Black, Self-Blue and Milles. This is a very long-term project, lol.

I must say that the English Bantam Orpingtons are very beautiful and gentle. Very fluffy, too.

He will wreck havoc with the proper d'Uccle feathering for a while, but I should be able to get them conquered in a few generations. It's the color I want....this dark brown all through the feathers, although near the shaft it's a lighter, chocolate brown. I am thinking of putting a Black Mottled girl in with him too, as that should be quite striking.

I am going to ask for a better camera for Christmas! My son was going to buy me a gaming computer (true geek girl here), but a camera would be so good for sharing pictures!

Quote: That is why I think my girl won in Columbus, it was her size, I thought she was squatty, but no she is just small. I have a girl, I'm looking at right now that looks like she may be too big. I need to get me some scales. I hope my girl I took to the show starts to lay here soon. I'm excited to start to hatch out some of these chicks, it has taken me two years to get to 3 different breeding pens and just the right amount of birds in each pen, 4 to a pen, I can add if I want. I want to show again, but not until spring or summer and not a lot of travel time. This learning thing is fun. The birds are sweet and easy to work with and don't complain about being cooped up, well some do.

Out of these colors, which one do you think would do best at a show:
Buff Columbian, White, Porcelian, Golden Neck, Blue Mille Fleur?

The one that was in the best condition & most closely met the breed standard description as long as it was a variety that has been admitted to the Standard.
