Full grown D'Uccle combs are quite large no waddles really but the comb is substantial for a bantam at maturity

both of these are 8 yr old hens

Hopefully someone can tell me the telltale signs of a cockerel vs pullet. Is it just the comb? thanks Kim

in a D'Uccle? at a young age or maturity? at maturity it is self evident for the same reasons long tail feathers, bigger comb, saddle feathers the hackle at a young age like a lot of other breads it is a crap shoot until it becomes evident one way or the other. but i sort of operate on the premise that if you have to ask its probably a roo

I do hope the OP has a hen. It's heartbreaking raising chicks and having to let them go, especially when they are beautiful as OP's d'uccles are. Time will certainly tell.

Thanks Nicole01. She's a cutie! My first d'uccle from Ideal Poultry looked more like yours and with the comb yours has, you know that stayed pink and small for a long time. My next one that I hatched, not so much. I think it does depend alot on the genetics of that bird. But, I think gunnarmc might be right! I've been staring at them every day trying to find ANY SIGN that one might be a girl! That doesn't bode well, does it!

Thought I'd keep anyone updated, in case you were wondering or in case it might be useful to you, "honey" is a girl! In the week since I posted, "red" (now named Charlemagne) has lots of pointy saddle feathers and "honey" (now named Miette) has none. So, tinychicky, you were right!

I'll try to get some pictures to show you the difference. I'm so surprised but glad that "honey"/Miette is a girl!
