Do you have too many ducks?

They are beautiful ducks!! I have like 19 Indian Runners, 3 Anconas, a ton of mixes, and 8 Muscovies, with call ducks on the way!!

That’s cool! I definitely like my ducks over chickens, but I do have my special chickens that mean a lot!

No, my ducks don’t get locked up at night, I’m still working on the new coop, but the can go in it if the want for sheltering and all that!!!
That’s pretty much my set up right now. There’s two ways in and out of the coop plus there are a couple of lean to type shelters if they prefer, and tons of shrubs out in the big yard for them as well. I love Runners, that’s all I have. My DIL and son have Anconas and white layers

Welcome to the duck group! I lock mine up at night because a few years ago I had a problem with a bobcat and an owl. At this point my ducks are trained to go in at night when I tell them to, which is a huge help. I’ve noticed that ducks are very much animals of routine and they can recognize certain words if I use them repeatedly.

Here is a link to my coops.

I used to lock them up at night, peas were the trick. After I added the drake it wasn’t as easy and then iit got hot here so I let them stay out where they could lay in cool dirt of stay in their pool. So now they’re out of the habit.

Welcome. You are not alone with duck math. I thought we wanted 6-8 at the most. We got 7 from TSC, 3 females and 4 drakes. Rehomed 3 drakes, and unfortunately one female died. Ordered more females for my drake. Thought why not get Muscovy now. Got two, they were super bonded and lonely, so got 3 more of their mates. Rescued a duckling, it needed a friend and was only able to get a male. Ordered more females just in case for this male. Ended up rehoming jerk before introducing new females to the flock. Eventually decided to just go ahead and max out the coop at 23 now. And still I think about getting a few more. It is amazing how quickly you end up with more and think this is my max, and that max comes and goes.
Haha! I can relate! I went through that with chickens for a while. Ducks are a bit harder on the water bill though and I have a huge garden so this is my limit for sure. If anyone goes broody next year the babies are out ASAP. But you know there’s always that one beautiful one you just have to keep lol.

Yeah. I have not hatched out any of my eggs. I need to have a plan for extra drakes. The one time I had duck, likely Pekin, I was not a fan of it. Granted it could have been the way it was cooked. My Muscovy are really making me feel guilty about not letting them raise ducklings.

Hey everyone, I’ve got a pic and a video of my ducklings getting some fresh air outside today. They were really zipping around everywhere.
