hey all... We have a pretty large lake with tons of dumped ducks and geese... even a swan!

there is an extremely humble man that takes care of these geese and is out at our lake nightly laying down greens, and feed to offset the diet of white bread the majority of people give them. In the winter he lays down 250lbs of food a night.... A NIGHT!

He often will take these birds into his home to rehabilitate them.

people seem to think that he is hired by the city or is a lake employee that is paid to do this... sadly he isn't. He is a self employed plumber that has done taken care of these guys for the last 8 years....EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT! He even has an imprinted goose that goes to work with him every day. The goose was dumped by its owner and was found trying to get into cars with people because he doesn't understand other geese! He won't even go in the lake.

I have started a fundraiser to go towards feed and vet bills. If you can donate... great... but don't feel pressured! I would just be happy if you shared this link with the people in the duck and goose community... he does so much for them.. i would like to do something to help him out. Thanks for reading...

This is Goosey!

Why does he feed them at night seems that would draw the predators in and alot would be killed. I love your idea but am thinking you better ask permission from Nifty Chicken [he's the owner of BYC] before doing this.

Oh no! I didn't even consider a donation link to be a problem! I will take it down if I'm breaking the rules.

As for the night feeding... He is a self employed plumber and every minute of his day is basically spent visiting clients. Luckily they don't mind Goosey tagging along! The area that he feeds them in is directly across from the island they all nest in away from predators.... Well most of them. There are so many dumped ducks that don't know the safety of the island and disappear.

Rehoming the domesticated guys is illegal here. Once they are dumped at the lake they are property of the city of dallas. They can only be removed if they are in immediate danger....which means all of them to me! There are appleyards, runners, Toulouse geese, a beautiful swan and countless other dumped birds. That plus the hundreds of birds native to the area!

He does what he can and I have bought some of Kim links books for him. His methods aren't perfect, but all it takes is one person to start a movement.... And he's doing amazing things for these birds without anything but their love in return.

I'll take it down if someone tells me to... But if it's ok I'll wait until I get the word... :)

A few years ago some monsters floated out to the island and used the sleeping geese as target practice. It nearly destroyed him. He has known them since babies!

That is horrible. He is doing an awesome job and to have a goose as a side kick is just so precious.

and what a wonderful thing this man is doing, why on earth have the local municipality not done something about this??

The police have a really great relationship with Charles and they may have even gone to bat for him before on this issue. They can't be removed by our laws but the police that actively patrol our lake have taken a huge part in protecting the birds! They are constantly checking in on them multie times a day! They even spent the whole day driving the most recent dumped gosling in their squad car until it could be looked after by Charles! Many of the birds are named after the officers. Our sweet Mute Swan is named after officer Katie!

The situation is what it is and there are so many things that just don't seem as if our city cares one bit about them...but Charles does.

So many people around here go to the lake to walk around and it's not uncommon to see children throwing rocks at these guys. Where I am the type of person that wants to scream and throw rocks at their parents, Charles will get down on their level and give them a treat to hand feed them. The kids attitude is immediately changed and they start seeing them as living things... Not just things at the lake. Our flock here is not sggressive in the least! Many of them will even let you pet them gently!

This is Goosey with officer Ricky!

Here are a few other shots that show how ridiculous our situation is....

This is so heart breaking to see so many , wonderful story about the work and care by Charles and the police but seems something needs to be done to educate the public. Looks like eventually there would be so many water fowl that there would be disease. Why couldn't a petition be started and brought before the council or whoever runs the park for adoption day or at least get the city to post signs saying it's illegal to dump water fowl and also signs asking the public to respect them and not harm them. What happens if Charles can't care for them?

Exactly, while i think it's wonderful this guy has stepped up and most of the police are on board, the city is dropping the ball in massive form here, this is wrong and will grow out of control beyond what anyone can do... what on earth? do they sell ducks/geese at the local 7-11 or something? I find this boggling, yes their has been the odd report of duck dumped pond situations but those are uncommon here, that place you have shown has become some wayward waterfowl pound, at this point i'd wonder if some are doing it on purpose?

I have just recently gotten involved with the work he's been doing down there. I am trying to start raising community awareness and then move forward with the people of our city on our side.

Right now I am trying to get our fundraiser recognized as a tax exempt organization....

anyone know much about that?
