I’ve had my hen for 4 years and my duck for 3. I hatched the duck myself. The Hen I bought from a feed store. So yes I know the odds. I could have had a roo. The thing is both of these girls have laid eggs....I’ve seen it....
Also my female duck sat on eggs. In 2021 I noticed my hen changing slowly. Getting bigger and well the rooster was treating her mean. He would run her off. Not mount her. Also I noticed my female duck changing her colors. She’s fully looks like a drake now. And my hen also fully looks like a roo. The hen was practically over night. I woke up one day last week....and she had saddle feathers and a long cockerel tail and she’s growing spurs. She’s also very mean. She used to be sweet. She’s now attacking my two dogs that guard them. They definitely didn’t do anything to provoke her. They were sleeping. I saw the whole encounter.
I definitely have been very careful of not having two roosters. I don’t want to get rid of her. But I can’t have her attacking my dogs. I don’t think it would be an issue keeping her otherwise. Unless she and my roo start fighting too.
I realize now both my females have lost their only ovary. But as to the Why!! Two birds who do not stay in the same coop. They live 15 feet apart from one another. Never have mixed socially. Different species too. I read that the odds of this is 1 in 10,000 and I have TWO. Should I buy a lottery ticket?
I am thinking it’s our water. We can’t even drink it.
Anyone want to take a guess. Make a theory.
I’ve been a chicken tender and a duck herder for 7 years.
