Duck Attacked by Raccoon (Wound)

We were shocked and couldn’t believe it either. The raccoon killed some of the others, but he was a survivor. I wasn’t sure he was even going to make it. It was a raccoon for sure, we caught him on the trail cam. He received multiple bites & an eye injury, but those have all healed. His wing was the worst of all & is still healing. He’s our biggest duck which makes me wonder if that’s why he survived, but we are still amazed.

It is really hard to tell from the photo. The look too small to be ribs, which is what I think would be in that area. Could they be the bottom of broken feathers?

Edit, I just got it to zoom in. It could be ribs. Still hard to tell. It there are bone fragments, hopefully they will work their way out.

I will try to take a better picture this evening. It’s his wing, not under it on his body. Which makes me think it wouldn’t be his ribs, but I don’t know the anatomy of ducks very well. He lifts his wing & the wound goes up with him if that makes sense?🤣

Since my neighbor chopped up my electric fence with a weed eater I've lost 2 hens. I only free range my flock randomly now. They have a predator proof coop and runs for nights .Sorry for your loss.Your boy looks very sad

Yep its his wing feathers. I've heard the bone that sticks out will eventually fall off and die

I usually put a few small bites of bait in front of the trap with more and bigger pieces inside. They get the first bites with no problem and then they want more. I also try to cover the trap with a few branches.
Depending on traps to protect your chickens is futile.By the time you catch them all half or all of your flock could be be dead or injured. You need a secure coop for your birds esp at night sorry
