I have a male and female KC, Henry and Boots.
They grew up with four chicks, everyone's about 6 to 7 weeks old.
They're a really tightknit group, it's a little odd really, my baby drake takes guarding his flock seriously and constantly has an eye to the sky. I hear him alert over airplanes and helicopters a couple times a day.
I've had trouble integrating this group with my leghorns, Henry treats other birds as a potential threat to his flock, and it doesn't go well. He acts like a mini feathered Sherman tank whenever the two flocks meet while free ranging. It's like a gang war, I've put up barrier fences across my property to keep the leghorns to the back half behind my barn and the mini flock to the front of the barn.
He moves them around the garden, and gets upset if one of the birds stray too far. Is this normal? Will he stay this awesome?
Whenever they dip out of view I need only walk over to my rose of sharon bushes and talk to Henry to get his raspy, sweet little replies from inside its deep shade.
I keep reading horror stories about drakes (killing chickens trying to mate them, super aggressive, generally giant jerks) as they mature and I'm seriously concerned, Henry is my buddy, he will do nearly anything for tomatoes, including letting a crazy lady pick him up and pet him. I'm really fond of his silly little fluffy butt.
