Hi All, we have been really concerned about our female daisy this last week. She had an eye injury we think due to overmating ( we only have one drake and one duck, thinking of adding females) and her eye seemed worse the next day with more pink flesh and feathers removed. Since yesterday she has been sitting more. She is in her first laying season and does lay every day. We collect her eggs each morning. She spends 7:30-9pm free roaming with our drake. She is more lethargic recently, eye injuries, her quack sounds more hoarse. She is swallowing more often and shaking her head more often like she has something aggravating her throat. And her beak got worse today (already posted photos of beak but today their was a little bit of blood at the top where the dark marks are)

Ducks are new to us and they are our babys so we notice any slight change. Im wondering is it tiredness from laying and over mating and beak aggravation from rocks and environment? Or is is more?
Any advice or opinions greatly appreciated. Here is a video of her earlier...

Is there possibly anything around that she’s getting her beak stuck in? Our ducks have always been curious. And for her acting like she has something stuck in her throat make sure she’s getting plenty of dirt or sand, small gravel, etc. if their crawl gets lodged it can keep them from eating or digesting food. Definitely add another female or 2 for your drake. Each can handle up to 12 hens! Sometimes they may kill the female by trying to overmate if enough females aren’t present. And adding a kiddie pool filled with water will help the mating experience be gentler for them in most occasions. Ours only ever tried when we cleaned it out.

Yes their are a few big stones/rocks, going to remove them tomorrow because I imagine she might be scraping her beak trying to get the bugs underneath. We have a kiddie pool and they mate in their most the time. We will definitely add another female soon, hope that eases. I thought seperating him for a day or so if they show signs of injury again

Drakes are pretty to look at and that’s the end of it for me.
I had a fair ratio of 1:6 drakes to ducks, at least I thought I did. Now I’ve only one drakes to 12 mature ducks and I swear that horny little $&’t is the busiest humper I’ve ever seen. His papa was sent to the market for his poor treatment of the ladies. So even at 12:1 girls to boy I still want to give that booger a kick from time to time. Obviously that has never happened no matter how much I’m tempted to.

Our Pekins always seemed to stick to each other. Mating pairs. They never tried to mate unless we filled the pool back up with clean water. The first boy duck we had only stuck to his female. Now we’ve brought a Cayuga in the mix. 3 boys and 4 girls, and he ONLY chases our Rouen girl. Told the boyfriend he bit off more than he hoped for trying to find her a mate. She’s the only bird left from our first crew taken out by a stray dog. She was a momma to the new babies we bought that always happened to be one boy one girl. Now I think we may have some Cayuga and Rouen mixed babies on the way. The Cayuga came with a welsh harlequin, and he follows her like she’s his mom, and only throws it to the Rouen. 🤦‍♀️ He’s definitely the horniest little duck I’ve seen in my raising time. But apparently he’s loyal to just her.

I do also kinda skip rocks towards him to make him stop. I won’t ever hurt my babes, but he will be disciplined like an actual child. 🤣

rotflmao. They are the horniest animals I think I’ve ever seen or at least been around. Its Comical for a while but can really get under your skin with the wrong drake. Several of my girls are missing feathers out of the back or their neck as if they have a skid mark on the back of their head.
I'm told the boys will ease up with age but I’m not so sure about it.

Pfizer and others should look at drakes and their chemistry to find a new ED drug to replace viagra.

He has actually slowed down now. He won’t make a move on her if she just acts like he’s not there. Or if I holler his name while he’s chasing her. Now she’s actually been spending most of her time in the coop laying on eggs. But it’s funny to capture things like this. We have 7 ducks. 4 girls and 3 boys. Our Pekins are the pairs he can’t mess with but he interrupted their session and they get pissed. 🤣
