I live in a hot, humid climate and as such I don’t have a proper coop, but rather a secure run with a couple of solid walls and shade cloth. I also have a yard for the chickens that is fenced with field fence lined with chicken wire, and topped with bird netting. I let them out in the AM and when I get home, usually @1pm, I open that and let them go to the barn/pasture area. I’m building an extension onto the coop that was originally meant for guineas, but when my neighbor said she was getting a dozen I figured I’d let her deal with them, after all, they’ll be over at my house eating my bugs too! So then the extension was just going to be for a few more chickens, then I thought of ducks :love I’ve always wanted some so I figured where to put a kiddie pool and turned the coop extension plans into duck coop plans. As of now it’s 7x7x8 with hardwarecloth walls and a metal roof. It’s attached to the Main coop/run, but separated by a solid hardware cloth wall. I’ve never had a predator try to get into my coop(at least as far as I can tell) but I do have raccoons, possums, & foxes (though I’ve only seen foxes out in the pasture and the horses chase them away) Now I’m thinking since ducks sleep on the ground and move around some even at night, things can change, and I should probably put solid walls at least part way up, maybe if the raccoon can’t see them he won’t be as likely to try to tear the walls down to get to them. How high should they be to deter a raccoon? Any other suggestions? I stopped construction when I switched to ducks so I could modify as needed, but I hope to finish it this week!
Here’s a pic of what I’ve done so far. Do you think the solid walls need to be 2’? 4’? All the way up @8’? Thanks!

:frow melody! I Love meeting people from our neck of the woods! We really cant do things quite like they do up north for snow and cold :) i found a lady in the my coops section who lives in FL and her coops are much like what you have, one of mine is too. If i were u i would go up 2' from the bottom and come down 2' from the roof also, for blowing rain.

Im concerned about the size of your coop though cant keep many ducks and any extra drakes will quickly hurt your ducks in a small enclosure.

Also if you put your kiddie pool up on a hardware cloth platform, you can keep your enclosure much drier. Position it so that the water drains out of the enclosure and big enough the whole pool has a ft surround. Ducks are a mess and u have a bit of a learning curve starting with them. I loved mine tho and i still miss having ducks sorely but DH is pretty solidly against anymore at this time.

Thanks @mixedUPturk ! I’m only starting with 3 ducks, all females. If we do well together, I will definitely enlarge. I have 11 acres, so plenty room!!! The mess is what has kept me from getting ducks all this time, but after reading some of the suggestions here, I’ve decided to give it a try.

Man im telln you give that pool an area to drain like the platform so they cant dig mud holes in their enclosure and ull be all set! Let em out in the morning to dig to china in puddles lol

3 ducks is Perfect! Im glad your planning properly itll be great! I love ducks!
