Duck, ducklings & waterers

I have a shallow waterer for the ducklings, but what kind of water container can i give momma duck that is deep enough for her nose to get into, yet not so deep a duckling will have trouble getting out should it fall in?

Also, is it Ok to have a shallow pan for them to wade in, or should i wait until they are older? like a pie tin or something similar?

For my adult ducks I have a rubbermaid tub with two cut outs on the front. I have two buckets in the tub - they can reach in and drink out of the buckets. I use a very small sourcream tub with about 1/4 or less of the top cut out for the duckling. I put some large marbles in the tub, so it won't tip over. Some people use a milk jug with a circle whole cut out just big enough for the duckling to get its head in but not its whole body. If you put a shallow pan with water and leave it your brooder will be a wet mess. You have to be real careful with the duckling or it will drown.

I let mine have a few minutes in a baby tub to swim at about a week old. They love it, but can get chilled quickly. I only gave them about 5 minutes, towel dried them and put them back in the brooder.

these ducklings will have a mother with them....IF the eggs hatch.
I have one of those round metal waterers which will be fine for ducklings and will have a deeper raised bowl for momma. i have a large pen just for them, so splashing water is of no concern. i will wait until they are a week old then find a shallow pan for them to swim in, maybe monitored swimming only for a while. mom will take care of the warmth part!

I gave them a shallow dish the first time so they could still stand and then gave them a deeper one to swim in the next time. Here's a video of them.

Ok, I was wondering tonight because my babies are now about 2wks old and they make a huge wet mess in there kennel....I have a rabbit hutch, wire top, plastic bottom, I put a food bowl and a 1 gal. waterer in there, and they wet the shavings so bad it looks like a swamp. I know ducklings need alot of water, at first I thought ok there ducks...so shaving wet are ok, but they started to get a chilll even with a heat lamp.

So Now Im trying to becareful....can I take the water out at night??? during the day I put them outside with the bottom off, wire over them, if I go out....I let them follow me in the yard and there are so cute running after me...then I put them in a baby bath tub with me watching them for a few mins and let them sun, but also supply shade for them....So again, can I take the food and waterer out of the kennel at night???
