It is now day 28 so hatching day for our 6 welsh harlequin eggs (one is already dead we think). We put them in lock down 3 days ago and candled them before doing this and 5/6 were moving in shells. SInce lock down we haven't candled them and there has been no c cheaping or moving of eggs. Is this normal for day 28? Should we candle them?

Day 28 is the day when hatching starts. When I hatched my welsh harlequins there was no sign on day 28 and it took over 2 days for them to hatch. It's a long process. Be patient. It's not a good idea to open the incubator after lock down because the drop in humidity could cause them to be shrink wrapped in their shells. I know it's tempting to take a peek and it's very hard to be patient but you need to give them more time. :)

ha ha ha! That's brilliant! A little more patience. The others will start hatching soon. They take a long rest after breaking through the shell so don't be surprised if that one does nothing now for hours. It's very tiring for a baby duck to hatch out of a shell. :)

The little guy is trying to hatch out of the wrong end. They normally hatch out of an air sack in the blunt end. Near where you x is. I'd be tempted to hold the egg in a damp paper towel and try and pick a very tiny bit of shell away to see if it's still alive and try and make a little nick in the inner membrane so that the duckling can breathe then put it back in the incubator to continue hatching by itself. If you see any veins or blood stop and put it back. Don't be tempted to take it completely out of the shell just give it room to breathe. I hope it's ok. Keep me posted.

did what you said. It's alive and cheeping :)

Two have externally pipped but the other 3 haven't even internally pipped. Should we be worried?

Thank goodness it's still alive. :) The other three I would have expected them to have pipped internally by now. I don't know what to suggest in this instance. If one of your eggs is pipped at the wrong end there's a possibility they might be too. Sorry this isn't much more of a help to you. Maybe hold them in a damp paper towel and candle them and try and identify where the air sack is and if there are any signs of life. If the air sack isn't at the blunt end they maybe struggling to pip.

Hi.
We did float test and one sank :( one low floated but very little movement and one low floated and was wiggling everywhere. Still no sign of internal pip unless we're just not seeing it
