What happened with the egg?

Well, I unfortunately stopped seeing movement at 34 or 35 days. I opened the egg up, and the duck was formed feathers and all, but it looked like no yolk absorbtion. Why would the duckling have no yolk absorbtion?

Maybe he couldn't manage the pip...couldn't break through the membrane...I think they need more oxygen to trigger the absorption of the yolk, which is why they take 24-48 hours to hatch. Not familiar enough with your breed of duck though, so that hatch estimate could be wrong.

Hi all. Today is 28 for my Call and Cayuga duck eggs. I have no signs of hatching or pipping at all. The temp was raised when I arrived at school about 104. Do I leave them in and see for a few days? Or should I just break the news to my 2nd graders that they are not going to hatch? Thanks.

Hi MissD,

I don't know the answer to your question, but want to recommend that you start a fresh thread. I think you'll get a lot more response--people tend to stop reading threads once they've been up for a while, even when new posts are added.

I know ducklings can survive temp spikes, but it depends on how long it spiked and whether it got any higher than that. If they were at that temp all weekend, then they are probably dead.

I'm so sorry about that. You should probably leave them a few days, anyway. Let the kids know they may not hatch because of an accident with the temps, but that there is still hope, and go from there. I'm so sorry about that--is there time to start a new batch before the end of the year?

Good luck. I know how hard it is when your little ones are disappointed about something. I hope it works out well--maybe the temp spike was brief and they're still going strong--

Heather
