I have 11 duck eggs in the incubator and it was day 24 yesterday and one of the eggs pipped. I removed them from the egg turner and locked them down. Will they hatch or have they already positioned themselves and now they can't hatch? The one that pipped and was chirping is not doing anything now. Also is it normal for them to start to hatch at 24 days? I never have any luck with duck eggs. I have tried 2 other times.

I don't do ducks, just chicken and occasionally turkey, but that is not a surprise. Different things can cause an egg to hatch early: heredity, wrong humidity, and just differences in eggs. A common cause is the average incubating temperature is too high so they develop faster. Yu might want to calibrate your incubator to make sure the temperature is correct. In the incubator or under broody hens my chicken eggs often hatch two days early, I think because of heredity. I have calibrated my incubator but don't know how to calibrate a broody.

That's happened to me before. They hatched.

Before they hatch they have to absorb the yolk, dry up blood vessels in the membrane around the hatchling, and do some other stuff. Some do a lot of this between internal pip and external pip. These tend to zip fairly soon after external pip. Others wait until after external pip to do a lot of these things. These worry us because they can go 24 hours or more between external pip and zip. So be patient.

Sometimes the hatch is over less than 24 hours after the first one pips. I've had some go on into the third day before it was over. I remember one where an egg hatched late one evening. It was 24 hours before I saw another pip. When I woke up the following morning another 16 eggs had hatched and the hatch was over.

Good luck with it and let us know how it goes.
