Duck eggs

Our ducks have finally started laying eggs, but they are just haphazardly laid through the yard and not in the nest/box. So I am going to doubt they try and lay on them to hatch which has my daughter pretty bummed out. So could we maybe put them in with our chickens in their nesting boxes and hope maybe one of them will sit on them? Our chickens aren't laying yet but should be close to laying. If not then my next question is, are they safe and OK to eat (obviously not the ones that have been out for a couple days) as we don't have an incubator but don't want them going to waste. Thanks for any info 😊

It might take the ducks a bit to figure out where to lay. They like a large dark space (mine have a 2ft x 4ft wood box) and lots of bedding to bury their eggs in.
It's unlikely the ducks will start sitting on their eggs right now because they just started laying. Ours took nearly a year to go broody.
It also depends on what breed(s) of ducks you have. Some are more likely to sit than others.
Your duck eggs are safe to eat as long as they're not too filthy :). And they should be good for more than a couple days - sometimes I don't collect for a few days and the eggs are still good.
Hope this helps!
