I also posted this under emergencies, but wanted to reach the knowlegeable duck people here for guidance.

I have a seven week old duck that was attacked by a coon. I want to treat her but didn't want to start before I had a plan. I have treated injured chickens before but know nothing about ducks. I am not even sure how the wing is supposed to look. The duck is walking around but is not quacking. I wouldn't have even known she was injured if she had been quacking as usual. I lost a couple of birds out of the coop she is in and decided to check her closely because she didn't quack at me. There is a bloody place high on the wing and the lower part is droopy or somewhat floppy. It appears there are feathers, skin, and flesh missing but I didn't take too much time to examine her because she seemed to be getting shocky.

I just want some suggestions from you experienced duck people on how to proceed. My thoughts are to treat her like I would a chicken. Put her in a pet carrier in the garage, keep her as quiet as possible, and treat her wounds with antibiotic ointment. Any other suggestions? I can not take her to the vet, if I can't pull her through this, I will have to put her down.

This pic was taken earlier this week, prior to the injury, is she a Swedish? I REALLY know nothing about ducks.

I don't have any experience treating that type of injury. But I would say that if you have treated chickens, treat her the same. I can't tell from the pic how the wing looks but if only 1 wing is injured, look at the other and see how it is sitting.

I'm sorry that you lost some. I have had a coon problem recently in my chick grow out pen. Hoping to trap it tonight.

Best of luck. I'm sure more will reply.

Ducks are helpful in that most of them like to bathe, so I would get the duck in to a lukewarm tub of water deep enough to float in, and then look closely. That can help clean things up.

Do use the topical antibiotic, and start thinking about what kind of oral antibiotic you may want to use - some injuries lead to systemic infections.

Clip the feathers around the wound, keep her away from flies, whatever you do. Fly strike adds misery and risk to the injury.

Get her on some vitamins with electrolytes and probiotics. At least vitamins and electrolytes. Yes, she is probably in shock.

Is she eating, drinking, pooping? Some ACV in the water will provide some electrolytes.
