For future reference there's no reason why you can;t feed medicated chick starter to ducks.

I agree 100%..back when arsenical compounds were used in poultry feeds as coccidiostats that held true..amprolium is not toxic to waterfowl.....

I disagree 100%. Not all medicated feeds are created the same. Not every medicated feed contains only amprolium. It is better for a person new to raising ducks to err on the side of caution than to cause their ducks to become ill or result in a fatality.

Ducks and geese can be fed chick starter and grower rations if commercial duck and geese feed in not available. These rations should not contain sulfa drugs because they may be toxic to ducks.

Ducks are not suseptible to all the different bacteria and diseases that chickens are. they are fairly good hearty stocks.

Medicated feed is generally not recommended unless your flock has a chronic (repeated) problem that you need to combat. The danger in feeding medicated feed when no specific medical problem exists is that you may be not only wasting money, but you may be encouraging the development of strains of bacteria resistant to that particular medication.

Because you may have personal success without complication you should not advise new duck owners to run willy nilly feeding them anything available. That is very irresponsible animal husbandry not to mention just plain bad advise.

If someone takes your word for it and feeds their ducks a medicated feed (say one you cannot getin your area but is strictly regional) and their ducks become sick and die are you willing to be respoinsible for the deaths and the replacement of those flocks?

No ducks yet - I jump everytime the phone rings, but I think I'll have to have another sleepless night..........

I don't have any of that anyway - I prefer NOT to use medicated anything, I did use it for my chicks because it was the only thing available.

As far as feed, I can only tell you my personal experience and thoughts.

I have had nothing but trouble when I have accidentally fed medicated chicke starter to ducklings. They developed shaky legs and didn't seem thriving. Once I discovered the mistake, all the symptoms went away. I prefer and always recommend non medicated starter for that reason.

Medicated feed is a thiamine blocker and often chick starter doesn't have the niacin that waterfowl need. You can give a supplement like brewers yeast as needed.
I usually only feed starter for 2 to three weeks and then start cutting in 16 % all purpose feed until point of lay at which time I put out oyster shell in a separate feeder and switch to layer pellets.

Watermelon on demand of course.
