I have a male mallard that is limping. I'm attaching pictures of his feet. Is this bumblefoot? I saw a post about treatment requiring duck shoes, but if I have limited time and no duck shoes, is there a way to help him or is there no way around investing a lot of time and making special purchases?

Secondly, I have a Pekin female. She gets along fine, but we notices that her middle toe looked wider on one foot than the other. In feeling it, it's like there is a side spur of bone within her webbing on one foot that isn't there with the other. Maybe there was an injury that didn't heal properly or something?

Hello, that's bumble foot..I have never personally dealt with the condition. It's painful so a quick fix is better than a prolonged process. The scab and puss bulb need to be removed. Keep the feet clean after you do the removal. Spray antiseptic spray on the wounds.

So is the thing that feels like a bone spur on the pekin duck bumblefoot too, or were you referring to the mallard only?

this looks like bumble. Have you run your finger over the swelling in case there is a splinter or thorn in it. I'd soak in Warm Epsom salt water then right in the middle try and get it open you'll need to get the core out before it will begin to heal. FYI don't let your duck drink the Epsom salt water because it also works as a laxative.

Regarding the Mallard - I just treated one that looked a lot like this, but on both feet. Treatment was:
  • Soak in warm water in bathtub for about an hour.
  • Clean with fingernail scrub brush and soap.
  • Rinse with chlorhexidine, though you could use betadine too.
  • Apply Neosporin to foot
  • Wrap foot with telfa pad, gauze, vet wrap
  • Place lots of duct tape over vet wrap. This will help keep it dry and clean.
  • Place in hospital cage.I
  • Change wrap every 3-5 days until better.
  • No swimming until better.
Mine did not have any pus to remove, and your duck might not either.
