I was checking my flock yesterday and noticed a wound on one of my duck's feet. Is this anything to worry about or maybe just a result of foraging in the woods? It looks a little swollen, so I'm not sure. Any help is appreciated!

They can get a condition called Bumble foot which is staff infection and needs to be treated. Get some Epsom salt and warm water and soak the foot. I use a bucket and put in the ES and warm water mix good then put both of the ducks feet into the solution hold on to the duck and let him stand in the bucket as long as possible this will help to bring down the swelling and clean the foot real good. Can you get some colorless iodine? Walmart and CVS both carry it and it's pretty cheap. after soaking take a qtip and put iodine all over tor top and bottom let it dry before putting the duck down. do the soaking daily and the iodine every 2 days till you see complete healing. This really needs to be cared for because if left untreated it can go systemic which usually doesn't end well for the duck. 1 cup of ES to half gal of warm water.

Thank you so much! I have read about bumble foot in chickens and was really hoping this was not that because people are always talking about doing surgery for that, which scares me! Thank you for the alternative treatment! I will go ahead and try your suggestion, although it might be a few days before I can get the iodine. Should I still soak if I don't have the iodine yet?

Yes go ahead and start soaking it will help with swelling and the iodine will bring any bumble up to the surface. And this may not be full fledged bumble yet, that's why it's good to treat it that way then you'll be a step ahead.

Just make sure you keep it clean, my drake got an infection in his foot from a small cut he had and we almost lost the poor guy

I have been keeping an eye on the duck's foot. It looks fine. Sent DH to get more epsom salt and some clear iodine. Instead, I get Blue Kote. DH talked to a salesman at Family Farm and Home and showed pictures of the injury and came back with instructions to use this every 3 days, so we will see how it goes. I will definitely keep a close eye on my little quacker and see how things progress.

I am a little concerned that the Blu Kote won't help like the Epsom salt and clear iodine do. My understanding is that Blu Kote treats the surface of a wound. But with bumblefoot, there is infection under the skin - that's why soaking with Epsom salt (known to soak into the skin and draw toxins) and clear iodine (that soaks in and appears to bind to the pus under the skin) have been helpful in a number of cases.

If BK does something I don't know about, someone please clue me in - - - so much to learn with various treatments.
