I had three duck in backyard for 5 years now. Now I'm considering to set them free back to the wild.
But I'm worry if they can survive out there?
I've got two questions.

First, I'm in Arizona now. If anybody knows there's any forrest with lakes is good for duck hiking?
Somewhere that they can live well and live happily out there?

Second, Am I doing the right thing. Since those ducks are kept in backyard all of their lives, never
got out of the wild.
Will they figure it out by themselves? Or I better just keep going on to keep them in the backyard?

But I really want to see them living in wild. Really want to set them free.

Please, do not 'set them free'... firstly, they have been fed all their lives and may not be able to forage properly and find enough food to keep themselves healthy... plus they have been protected and may not be able to identify all predators or be able to escape/hide... lastly, it is very illegal to let domesticated animals loose anywhere, it is considered 'dumping' the animal...
Much as many of us enjoy seeing wild animals in their natural habitat, if they aren't wild and we have made them dependent on us, then we owe them a proper place to be protected and cared for...

Yes, I think you're right!
What if I go camping beyond the lake for a week. Let them decide themselves?
I'll keep feeding them for six days. If they keep coming back on seventh day.
I bring them home.

It probably a great chance for them to learn... What is a really good life.

What do you think?!

it is illegal to set them free...whether they 'decide' or you just let them go. you can go to jail and pay a large fine for dumping a domesticated animal into the wild...and really are you ok with possibly all of them dying by starvation(you say you'll feed for 6 days what are they suppose to do once you stop feeding them? or when bad weather comes that may claim them or a predator like a dog or coyote may come and kill and eat them.

if you want to see ducks in the wild go watch some wild mallards....you ducks are not wild they are domestic pets and belong in your yard to be cared for and protected by you if you not "set free" to more then likely die cause you've gotten tired of them or whatever

do NOT dump your duck its cruel to the ducks and they deserve better...if you dont want them try rehoming them to someone else

Why do you say "back to the wild?" These ducks are farm animals they have nothing to do with the wild. They'll be eaten alive by predators or starve to death.
Give them to someone else. Someone on BYC will probably want them.

Are you serious?? Or just trying to get duck-lovers riled up? I don't think you will find anyone here that will tell you its ok to dump these ducks in the woods. Period.
