Hello,

I am new to this forum, although I have referred to this site many times for information. My daughter joined the 4H last year and we have expanded our family tremendously since. We have had our first duck hatchlings yesterday and more that should finish today.

I will give some history...
Originally, our two bantam chickens were sitting on the duck eggs, but somehow a few were smashed and two of the four we brought in were cracked. We were not equipped to hatch ducklings and we grabbed a sand bucket and some straw then placed the four eggs under the heat lamp. We had them this way for approx. two-three weeks. We added water to the bottom of the bucket and misted the eggs, rotated them, and they continued to grow nicely. That was until two days ago, when we noticed that two internally pipped and the other two, which were the cracked two, were not moving that much. We moved the eggs into a clean tub and laid a clean towel down across the bottom. We also placed a humidifier next to the tub, with the lid of the tub directing the steam above the tub.

I decided to open the shell where the beak was for the first egg that internally pipped. When I did this I noticed it was surrounded by the interior lining, with the veins, of the shell which was white. I immediately dampened the lining and continued to help that duckling. That duckling finished hatching yesterday afternoon.

While I was working with duckling 1, I decided to open duck 2 and again this duck was worse off. I helped this one and decided to look at the other two with a flashlight. At this time, both the cracked eggs internally pipped. My daughter was worried that those two were worse, so we decided to open both of them. They were much worse, I think because of them being cracked.

Okay, now I am getting to the area I need some guidance. The two I opened last (cracked eggs), I left all day yesterday in their shell, but with the air pocket of shell gone. I used a q-tip to keep the yolks moist. One of them, what seems to be the weaker of the two, popped its head out late evening, which exposed its yolk more. I dampened it before bed around 11:00pm and again around 4:00 am and again around 5:30am and since then I have been keeping their yolks wet.
My question, can I keep the yolk too wet? Other question, should I keep their bodies a little wet? Their hair keeps drying up stiff-like because of them not being clean and the heat lamp combo.

Thank you in advance!

Thanks for joining the forum

I would ask this question in the Thread Formerly Known as Hatch Day is Today

UPDATE:
Our khaki duck has hatched 8 ducklings so far. She still has some eggs in her nest. We have taken the ducklings each day as they hatched and she did not seem to mind. She is very protective of the eggs though. That is why we cannot tell how many eggs she has to go. I hope the rest hatch today, so we can start getting her nice again.

Okay getting to the exciting stuff....
The babies appear to be mallard/khaki mixes with the exception of one. We for sure have one pure khaki! The mixes are cute. They all look different. Some are mallard markings with a dark coat over, sort of like a muddy mallard. Others are mallard markings with a mustard color frosted over their brown down. Some have solid brown beaks while others have pink and brown. Their feet are either solid brown like the khaki or off yellow with brown throughout like the mallard babies.

Does anyone else have a mallard khaki mix? If so, what did it look like as it matured? We are wondering if they will favor one breed or look mixed.

So cute and so fun!

Momma is very protective right now and it's chilly and we had a few storms with heavy rain and wind go through here yesterday evening and she even slid the nest under the chair more! I have no idea how many have hatched but when she went to ruffle her feathers a little at me I saw a little fuzzy ducking go to snuggle under her more! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm all prepared with food and a waterer and it's in with momma now.

The two week old babies we hatched on our own without an incubator!

They are all so sweet!

Also, the momma was not sitting on the nest for most the day and we started to wonder if she abandoned the rest. We went and got the rest of the eggs and candled, two were bad and the last was good. I rinsed the egg so it did not smell like the two bad and put it back on the nest. My son then put the momma back on and so far she stayed. Keep our fingers crossed!

Was busy yesterday! I checked on the nest and I heard the PEEPING INSIDE AN EGG! When she turned the eggs I could see the little one trying to hatch.
She pushed the egg out so I got it and wrapped it in a warm dampened towel and it was about 94 outside so I sat out with it for about 3 hours while it hatched...AMAZING!!!!
Once it was dry I took it to mommy and she checked it out and accepted the duckling! It was so interesting how she moved the eggs in a circle and left a space in the middle for me to put the duckling and then she sat on the nest and everything was just fine. Later in the evening I saw the little one laying beside mommy!
WHAT A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE FOR ME!!!!!
Now we have 2
