Duck Houses

Here's the duck house the my dh built me. It's wonderful, on skids so that in the winter I can move them closer to the house for ease of care. Both ends are doors so I can hose it out.

I've since changed the door, I stole it off for a chicken house that is just about like this one. I'm currently building a pen on the rear.

I did have to convince them that they wanted to be in there at night. I just fed them in there at dusk and after a time they would be in there waiting for me. I occasionally still feed them in there to remind them where I want them to go at bedtime.

My hubby did a great job building it. It was our first attempt at a portable animal shelter. We've since built 4 more, a couple of different styles. He grumps whenever I ask for a new building, but secretly I think he absolutely loves the creativity of it.

I will be cleaning it our this week so we can get the new pen added. I will shoot a couple of pics and try to get them posted before I take off for the long weekend.

Here's my duck house. I LOVE ducks, but they are the messiest creatures on earth. For their pool, I dug a large pit in the ground, and put several boards over the pit. The pool sits on the support boards. I drilled a hole in the bottom, and put a regular bathtub plug in the hole. Now, I just pull the plug, and all that dirty water drains into the pit below, then soaks into the ground. It is the easiest way to change water, and the ducks love it!

Here are a few views of the house. Some of these pics were taken last year, and I have since put tough livestock wire around the pen. Hope you like them:)

Wow I love the idea about the drain on the pool. Do you think a water hose can fit in that hole somehow to have a drain tube?

I love the plants growing in their too! Really nice.

Originally, I wanted the hole to attach to a pipe, which would drain somewhere in the yard. I've read about people doing so, and I'm sure you could attach a hose to the hole if you wanted. But it would get clogged after a while, so you'd have to figure out a way to fix that. Maybe use some wider pvc pipe?
